Q: What can you do for me?

A: Divorce and separation can be one of the most upsetting and unsettling times in your life. The circumstances surrounding the breakdown of your relationship are unique. As a priority, I will listen to your specific needs and requirements and draw on over ten years’ experience as a divorce lawyer to offer informed advice, and an approach tailored to the circumstances in which you find yourself, to achieve the best possible outcome for you and your family.

My work ranges from high profile divorces dealt with in court based proceedings to settlements resolved by agreement and covering issues relating to both finances and children. If your financial arrangements are complex, for example involving business interests, trusts, pensions or an international dimension, I can help you deal with these in the context of an overall financial settlement. If you are in a relationship and would like to protect your position should the worst happen, I can draft living together and pre and post-nuptial agreements.

Q: What makes you different from other divorce lawyers?

A: As a divorce lawyer who has practised at the Bar as well as within Mills & Reeve, I am one of a very few number of barristers working within law firms in Yorkshire to provide day to day advice to clients going through divorce and separation.
I have extensive courtroom experience, but am also a trained collaborative family lawyer and often resolve divorce proceedings without recourse to the courts. I am equally at home working with you to achieve a negotiated settlement outside of the court arena as I am representing you in highly contested court proceedings if that is the representation that you need at that time. It’s about you and what you want and need.

Q: What do your clients say about you?

A: Many of my clients are friends and relations of former clients.
More specifically, I was delighted when one of my clients recently wrote that I was "a tremendous asset to Mills & Reeve. Calm, assured, diligent and clearly very knowledgeable, Joanna performed superbly throughout the proceedings."
I was just as pleased when another commented that I had been “fantastic throughout – efficient, pragmatic and clever."

Q: What involvement do you have in the local Leeds community?

A: Born and raised in a village just outside Ilkley, West Yorkshire, I felt the call of my roots and returned to work in Leeds after spending the early part of my professional life with top family law chambers in London.

I belong to Resolution, an association of family lawyers committed to adopting a constructive approach to family cases, as well as the Family Law Bar Association.

Outside of the law, I am a school governor, wife and mother.

Q: What else should I know about you?

A: I became a family lawyer because I wanted to make a real difference to people’s lives. That is no less true now than it was when I qualified over ten years ago.
