It is possible to ask a court to order a spouse to pay maintenance (a sum of money paid on a regular basis out of income).
The Child Maintenance Enforcement Commission (formerly the Child Support Agency) can be asked to assess and collect what it considers the appropriate amount of maintenance for children.
