Alternatives to divorce

Other financial proceedings

You may need to sort out some immediate financial difficulties without wanting to apply for a divorce.
It is possible to ask a court to order a spouse to pay maintenance (a sum of money paid on a regular basis out of income).
The Child Maintenance Enforcement Commission (formerly the Child Support Agency) can be asked to assess and collect what it considers the appropriate amount of maintenance for children.
But there are real problems involved with the agency – see the section on the Child Support Act in the finances section.
