It is usually helpful to set out what has been discussed and agreed in writing.
This can be done easily. The document is usually called a separation agreement or deed of separation.
It is worth getting a solicitor to prepare this document so that it covers all of the points that need to be made. There is no set format for these documents but they may include:
- whether or not a divorce is planned in the future;
- what the arrangements are for the children;
- what maintenance is going to be paid; and
- what is going to happen to the house.
