Separation >> Coping on your own
On separation, your personal resources are spread very thinly. It is better not to take on too many issues, particularly legal and financial ones, unless you have to.
Children in particular will need considerably more of your energy, at the very time when you feel hard-pressed to come to terms with your own feelings.
For a couple and their children, how smoothly the separation goes will depend on:
the reasons for ending the marriage;
the timing in the process for each partner;
the emotional acceptance of the separation for each person involved;
the degree of involvement on legal and financial matters;
the arrangements for the children; and
the involvement of third parties.
