Same sex relationships

What is a civil partnership?

A civil partnership is defined as:

  • a relationship between two people of the same sex formed when they register as civil partners of each other either in the UK or outside the UK under an Order in Council; or
  • by virtue of having registered an overseas relationship (see Registration and legal consequences). It will only apply to same-sex couples.

The partnership will end on the first of the following events:

  • death;
  • dissolution; or
  • annulment.
