Same sex relationships

Since December 2005 it has been possible for same sex couples to register as civil partners.

In many ways the obligations, rights and duties to each other are similar to a civil marriage, subject to certain exceptions.

A civil partnership is not open to heterosexual couples. If a heterosexual couple live together outside marriage, different laws apply – see the section on living together.
